Garden Office/Gym - Farnham

Following our meeting with the client, it became evident that they required a dedicated workspace away from home to create a distinct separation between their professional and personal lives. The design needed to accommodate a shower room, a small kitchen area, a workspace, and some gym equipment. Consequently, we developed plans for a 45m² structure, partially sunken into the ground to minimise its visual impact when viewed from the house. Ensuring year-round comfort in the office was a priority, making the construction and insulation methods critical to the project’s success. 

Securing planning permission for an outbuilding can often be challenging; therefore, we chose to construct this garden office under permitted development regulations. This approach required us to adhere strictly to height and overall size limitations to ensure compliance.

We started the project by laying a structural raft foundation and erecting cavity blockwork to define the building’s shape. Following this, we installed a flat roof and prepared the internal area for underfloor heating. Once our trusted subcontractors had completed the plumbing and electrical work, we proceeded with plastering, tiling, and decorating the interior to meet the client’s distinct requirements. 

To supply hot water for both the underfloor heating and the shower room, we introduced a gas boiler, necessitating the installation of a gas main, along with provisions for electricity and mains water up the garden from the house.

Both the client and our team were thoroughly pleased with the final outcome. The installation of standing seam cladding on the exterior significantly enhanced the building’s modern aesthetic.
